Unlike Bitcoin, the Ethereum network can run decentralized programs. To do this, each fullnode runs a virtual machine called the Ethereun Virtual Machine or EVM. To prevent infinite loops in the code from crashing the network, the sender of the transaction pays a GAS Fee for each command that the EVM processes.
